| Great place to stay in Pensacola

By user-484001 on 2017-10-23.

We really enjoyed staying at this state park. It is located out on what feels like an island. On the way there and just pass the campground are a series of bunkers and a fort from different wars since this area was a strategic placement to protect the bay. The campsite is not the nicest as the sites are a little close to each other and do not have sewer but it did not feel too crowded. The bathrooms are decent and the dump station is relatively easy to get to. They have trails to the beach which is probably the nicest part of this campground - the beautiful and uncrowded beaches in the park.

| Feels remote but right in Pensacola

Great campground. Feels remote but close to town. Several loops. The first one with the most trees, closest to beach access, sites closer together. The others are a bit further down the road, one is tent area, the others RV ot tent sites - more open, some trees, angled sites separated by grass in between, water & 50 amp, fire pit and picnic table. The dump station entry designed for smaller campers, a pretty sharp u-shape, but doable for large RVs by backing in. Clean nice bathhouses. Campgrounds and other parts of the park were clean and well-maintained. Camp store was closed - disappointed - must buy ice & firewood elsewhere (convenience store on road into the park, next to Peg Leg Pete's great popular restaurant - go early!). Nice campground hosts - 1st time we've ever seen an off-duty sign, but there are several camp hosts. The beach is gorgeous and so well preserved. Be prepared for a long walk-way out (take water!) from the campground (especially the 2nd larger area). No facilities at the beach. There are other easier beach access areas with picnic and restroom areas. The fort areas are spectacular! Such history and preservation. Definitely worth experiencing all the interpretive areas. Our 2nd stay and we hope to return.

| Stranded

Pros: Great campground with plenty space. The beaches are outstanding and easy to access from the campground! Easy bike riding along the streets and to the fort area. Cons: No sewer hookups and weekend crowds make it a bit difficult. The real problem is that a storm can easily impact the access road and you could be stranded for days at the campground. This was the situation October 25 when a gulf storm surprised the park rangers forcing the access road to close for 3-days. Campers were not notified of the road conditions until it was too late to leave. Finally got out October 28 at 4:30 p.m. We will consider other campgrounds before coming here again.
